Blackmail

Blackmail, in law, criminal offense of attempting to extort money or property by threats of exposure of crime or of disreputable conduct. It is distinguished from extortion in its widest sense, which is the use of any means of illegal compulsion or oppressive exaction. As a rule, defense to the charge of blackmailing does not include the claim that the person threatened with exposure of criminal or shameful conduct is guilty of the offenses charged or that the attempt at extortion was not successful.
