  • Attorney General for England and Wales: Her Majesty”s Attorney General for England and Wales, usually known as the Attorney General, is the chief legal adviser of the Crown in England and Wales. He represents the Queen and the Government in court, and has supervisory powers over prosecutions, which are the responsibility of the Director of Public Prosecutions and the Crown Prosecution Service. The Attorney General also represents the Crown in many judicial proceedings relating to the public interest, e.g. the administration of charities and income tax. He is assisted by the Solicitor General: both offices are filled by political appointees who must belong to either house of Parliament. The Attorney General is not usually a member of the Cabinet, but is called to advise it when necessary.
  • Attorney General of Ireland: The Attorney General (Irish: An Ard-Aighne) is a constitutional officer who is the official adviser to the Irish Government in matters of law. He is in effect the chief law officer in the Republic of Ireland. The Attorney General is not a member of the Government but does participate in cabinet meetings when invited and attends government meetings. Attorney General v. X or the X Case was a 1992 Irish Supreme Court case which established the right of Irish women to an abortion if their life was at risk because of pregnancy.
  • Attorney General of Canada: The Attorney General of Canada (French: Procureur général du Canada) is the top prosecuting officer in Canada. The role is part of the cabinet post of the Minister of Justice. In Canada, an Attorney General is the principal law officer of “the Crown”; the Minister of the provincial or federal government responsible for the administration of justice.
  • Attorney General of Ontario: The Ministry of the Attorney General of Ontario is responsible for providing a fair and accessible justice system which reflects the needs of the diverse communities it serves across government and the province. It strives to manage the justice system in an equitable, affordable and accessible way throughout the province.

Attorney: 1. A term for a lawyer more often used in the United States. 2. A person who has been appointed under a power of attorney by a capable grantor to act on their behalf. An Attorney can be for either property issues, or personal care issues, or both.
