Summary of Association Of Southeast Asian Nations

Commonly known by the acronyn ASEAN, a regional cooperation association concerned with the promotion of economic development and trade among the member states. The group was founded at Bangkok in 1967 by Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, and Thailand. ASEAN lay dormant until 1976, when an action program was adopted and a permanent secretariat established at Jakarta. Recent developments include approval, effective July 1980, of tariff preferences on 1,948 items, bringing to 4,325 the number of preferential trading items among the group; adoption of several industrial projects, with at least one project to be constructed in each member state; the signing, in March 1982, of an agreement for commercial and economic cooperation with the European Economic Community; and agreement to establish an ASEAN Agricultural Development Center, to be funded by the United States.

Notion of of Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN): An organization of 10 countries located in Southeast Asia that promotes economic growth and regional stability. Since 1997, ASEAN has also hosted a forum known as ASEAN Plus Three (APT), which has included China, Japan and South Korea.[1]
