An association of independent Arab states formed for the purpose of advancing cooperation among the members in political, economic, and social matters. The league, formed in Cairo in 1945, has a permanent council and secretariat. A principal objective of the league since its formation has been to coalesce opposition to Jewish immigration to Palestine, and subsequently the establishment of Israel.
