Appellations of Origin and the GATT Policy Negotiations
In relation to the GATT Policy Negotiations, Christopher Mark (1993) provided the following explanation and/or definition of Appellations of Origin: (Also referred to as “geographic indications of origin.”) The name of a country, region, or locality designating a product's origin –such as Champagne or Camembert –and having the same function as a trademark or brand name. International negotiations on protection ofintellectual property rights seek to resolve differences among countries' eligibility requirements (or lack thereof) for use of appellations or origin.
