About the Author: Thomas Hayme (1689-1751)

In the words of the Tarlton Law Library (University of Texas School of Law):

“Thomas Hayme (also Haymen) was born at Heinsberg near Freiberg on 21 June 1689. After studying theology and law in Freiberg and Leipzig,Title page and frontispiece, Allgemeines teutsches juristisches Lexicon, 1738 he became a notary in Wittenberg. In 1716 he took a position as a lawyer in Dresden. He began his academic career by returning to Leipzig in 1717 as a lecturer, progressing to the position of Doctor of Law at Erfurt in 1723. By 1741 he held the provost’s chair at Leipzig.

This ambitious work attempted to define German terms for all laws in Germany, historic and contemporary: bourgeois, commercial, ecclesiastical, governmental, natural, and folk law, Roman and Canon Law, city, regional and state laws, customs, traditions, international law, and laws borrowed from elsewhere. Terms appear in German, followed by definitions in Latin and German, with Latin marginal notes. This is the only edition.”
