Alimenta

Alimenta, term meaning “all the necessities of life” to ancient Roman jurists. In the practical sense, alimenta referred to a system of social legislation, which was instituted first by private individuals such as Roman writer and official Pliny the Younger. The imperial government later supported it, primarily under emperors Nerva, who ruled from ad 96 to 98, and Trajan, who ruled from ad 98 to 117. Loans were made by the state to individuals on the security of their land, probably at 5 percent interest. This interest was then paid to the local municipalities for the care and support of orphans and underprivileged children. (1)
