In the context of trade organizations, Christopher Mark (1993) provided the following definition of Agency of Industrial Science and Technology (AIST): An agency of Japan's Ministry of International Trade and Industry (MITI}, responsible for promoting a range of technologies that are under the jurisdiction of the trade ministry .AIST currently operates 15 research institutes, conducts in-house research, and sponsors research programs to encourage private-sector technology development.
