International Treaties Popular Names

Some international treaties have acquired popular names that are not always reflected in the wording of their published title. As a result, a browse action or a search on a computer database may not be successful (or an online search may be less successful) unless the user knows the exact title, or at least certain words within it.

Some examples are listed as follows, although this is not a definitive list:

Popular name: Berne Copyright Convention, or 1886 Convention
Full title: Convention between Great Britain, Belgium, France, Germany, Hayti, Italy, Liberia, Spain, Switzerland and Tunis, for the creation of an International Union for the Protection of Literary and Artistic Works (Berne, 9 September, 1886)

Popular name: Biological Weapons Convention
Full title: Convention on the Prohibition of the Development, Production and Stockpiling of Bacteriological (Biological) and Toxin Weapons and on their Destruction (London, 10 April 1972)

Popular name: ECHR ; European Human Rights Convention
Full title: Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms (Rome, 4 November 1950)

Popular name: The Good Friday Agreement
Full title: Agreement between the Government of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and the Government of Ireland (British-Irish Agreement: Belfast, 1 April 1998)

Popular name: Landmines Treaty/Convention
Full title:Convention on the Prohibition of the Use, Stockpiling, Production and Transfer of Anti-Personnel Mines and on their Destruction (Oslo, 18 September 1997)

Popular name: Treaty of Rome
Full title: Treaty Establishing the European Economic Community (Rome, 25 March 1957)

The UK’s Accession to the Treaty of Rome was published under the title: Treaty Concerning the Accession of the Kingdom of Denmark, Ireland, the Kingdom of Norway and the United Kingdom of great Britain and Northern Ireland to the European Economic Community and the European Energy Community including the Act concerning the Conditions of Accessions and the Adjustments to the Treaties with Final Act (Brussels, 22 January 1972)

The 1992 Maastricht Treaty was published under the title: Treaty on European Union together with protocols, Final Act, Declarations and Decision (Maastricht, 7 February 1992)

Popular name: Unesco
Full title: Constitution of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (London, 16 November 1945)

Popular name: Versailles Treaty
Full title: Treaty of Peace between the Allied and associated Powers and Germany (Versailles, 28 June, 1919).
Note: This Treaty also contains the original Constitution of the ILO (International Labour Organisation) and the Charter of the League of Nations.
