A nation that is economically self- sufficient. Efforts toward achieving a state of autarchy usually encompass significant governmental controls over the economy, especially in the areas of international trade and dealing in foreign exchange. Autarchy is a national policy pursued almost in-variably for political reasons, usually in preparation for war.
